Singapore LEGO Fans Celebrate National Day with Pride | SG57 MOC by Joel Tong

WHAT TO BUILD

Singapore LEGO Fans Celebrate National Day with Pride

FEATURING

BUILDS AND WRITING BY JOEL TONG

MOC TITLE: Chin Mee Chin Confectionary (Katong)

Inspiration: I built this after coming across Medium Azure bricks at Bricksworld's PAB section. After realizing it matched the color of the Chin Mee Chin Cafe in Katong, I decided to build it.

BUILDING TECHNIQUES AND TIPS

The modified brick with studs on the side is very useful. As shown, it can be used to make a brick wall, mosaic. If placed on the side (SNOT), it can be used to attach a decorative pillar as well.

When coupled with the mason 1*2 brick, it makes for wonderful paved roads.

The modified 2*8 while plate could be used to create a 1/2 plate spacing between plates. This was used in the chibi build to create the patterned wall. It can be used as a cornice as well.

nostalgia

The cafe holds a very special place in my family (and for many Eastees). My maternal family grew up in Telok Kurau. Growing up, my mom used to frequent the cafe as a student at the nearby CHIJ.

My grandma and extended family knew the cafe from memory. While the cafe has a new owner, it has not changed much over the years. I built this MOC to remind my family of the happy times spent back then (my grandpa passed last June).

building tips

Follow other Facebook LEGO MOC groups. Borrow ideas and share them. Always have an open mind (what-if?) And don't be afraid to tear down LEGO sets - Lego is meant to be built and foster creativity.

EASTER EGGS

In the modular build, I have included a Rediffusion Box (cable radio in the 1960s) and a Diamond-brand clock.

Check out the minfigure dining at the patio as well. There is Lego LOCO man, which was included when the software train game was sold in the late 1990s under LEGO Media. I have a copy of the game and kept the minifig ever since. The legs were colored red by me when I was 10.
